About the Holiday
Eat an Oreo Day celebrates the best selling cookie in the world, which were first made in New York City in 1912, when they were originally called Oreo Biscuits. Oreos nowadays are both vegan and kosher. Previously, they used to be made with lard (trans fat) but since the mid-late 1990s Nabisco started making them with non-hydrogenated vegetable oil in an effort to make them healthier. Many people eat them by pulling them apart and eating the inside first. They are also commonly dipped in milk.
There are many varieties of famous Oreo cookies and the types sold vary per country. With well known varieties including the classic, double stuff, peanut butter, cool mint, and chocolate. One of the first flavors introduced was lemon meringue. The famous slogan, "Oh!, Oh! Oreo!", was introduced in 1950.
