About the Holiday
If you've ever dreamt about starting your own business but have been putting it off, then I Want to Start My Own Business Day is your perfect excuse to stop waiting and to start doing. Not only can starting your own business be the start of a new life for you, it's also an opportunity to help your community. The SBA (US Small Business Administration) states that "small businesses provide 55% of all jobs and 66% of all net new jobs since the 1970s". If you're looking for extra motivation, see Entrepreneur.com's list of 20 Reasons to Start Your Own Business.
Before taking the plunge, be sure to do a self assessment. In most cases, starting and running a business requires sacrifice and hard work. According to the SBA.gov, useful entrepreneurial traits include: being comfortable with taking risks, independent, persuasive, able to negotiate, creative, and having the support of others. The SBA.gov website contains many resources that explain what it takes to start your own business.
Once you're ready to hit the ground running, Forbes.com states "Five Things You Should Know Before Starting A Business", which are:
- Own your name: Make sure the company name you choose is one with an available trademark and Internet domain name.
- Get in with the law: Understand what regulations, licenses and taxes you will need to follow, obtain and pay for your new business.
- How much do you need to live? When working on your business plan, do not forget about the most important factor: YOU. You need to take into account your living costs. Rent, mortgages, and health insurance — these are all things that don't pay for themselves
- Where are you in your life? Starting a new business takes brains, bravery, and what will seem to be endless hours of hard work.
- Don't over — or under — spend. Starting a business can be incredibly financially taxing on you and your family. You will need to learn where and when to spend.
