About the Holiday
International Day of the Seal was declared, on this day in 1982, by Congress to bring attention to the cruelty of hunting these animals and realize we may be contributing to their extinction. These marine mammals are related to sea lions and walrus and their babies are called pups. Most seals live in Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, eat fish and are prey to sharks, polar bears, orca whales and humans. Humans often hunt seals for their meat, oil, and pelts.
