Sally Ride Day is a day that honors the first American woman to go into outer space. Sally Ride Day is celebrated on this day, because Sally Kristen Ride was born on May 26, 1951. Ride joined NASA in 1978, and on June 18, 1983, she became the first American woman in space as a crew member on Space Shuttle Challenger for STS-7. Today is a great day to learn more about the U.S. space program, and to encourage those young people with dreams of becoming an astronaut.
