About the Holiday
Cinco de Mayo marks the day the Mexican army defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. The Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza's force of 4,000 soldiers defeated twice as many French soldiers. Contrary to common misperception, this is not Mexico's Independence Day which is celebrated on September 16th.
