About the Holiday
International Children's Day celebrates and honors children everywhere. This date was designated by the United Nations in 1954 though many countries celebrate it on June 1st. It's a day for review and to take action for children's rights and well-being. Many children worldwide do not get adequate education and health care, with many having to work long hours and live in poor conditions. 7.6 million children die each year due to preventable causes. Pneumonia is the number one cause of death in children under the age of 5.
