About the Holiday
At the end of Nurses Week we celebrate International Nurse's Day which is the birthday of Florence Nightingale born in 1820. She was the founder of modern nursing. In 1974, the International Council of Nurses stated that May 12th should be International Nurses Day. Florence Nightingale was nicknamed Lady with the Lamp and was put in charge of nursing during the Crimean War where she worked tirelessly carrying a lamp in the dark hallways during night rounds. It is said that she reduced the hospital's death rate by two-thirds.
