About the Holiday

St. Urho's Day falls on the day before St. Patrick's Day. Unlike St. Patrick who drove snakes out of Ireland this fictional saint drove out grasshoppers from Finland. In ancient times grasshoppers were killing the grade crops so St. Urho said "Heinasirkka, heinasirkka, mene taalta hiiteen" which translates to "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go away" (some translations say go to hell). He saved the grape crop. The feast is celebrated by wearing royal purple and Nile green colors and is celebrated in northern Minnesota and Finnish communities. St. Urho is the patron saint of Finnish Vineyard workers.
