About the Holiday
Amelia Earhart Day celebrates the birth of one of America's greatest aviators, Amelia Earhart. Born on this day in 1897 in Atchison, Kansas, Earhart became the first woman to not only fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, but also to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross - a medal awarded to members of the United States armed forces who distinguishes himself or herself in support of operations by "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight". During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean in 1937.
