About the Holiday
The history behind April Fool's Day is that New Year's Day, the first day of the year, used to be on April 1st according to the Julian calendar. In 1564, Pope Gregory XIII introduced the new Gregorian calendar which changed the start of the year to January 1st. Though, some folks didn't want the date to change, or due to the fact that communication back then was more difficult (with no radio, phones, TV, Internet) many folks did not know it changed. In France, this group of rebels and the uninformed were referred to as "fools" and it became tradition to mock and play pranks on folks who wouldn't or didn't give up celebrating New Years Day on April 1st.
