About the Holiday
On Barbershop Music Appreciation Day we appreciate a classic form of music that originated in the 19th century when U.S. barbershops often also served as community centers. There are 4 singers in a barbershop quartet as each of them has a chord for each melody note -- the lead, tenor, bass and baritone. Barbershop music often features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies.
This holiday originated in 2005 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Sweet Adelines International which was founded on July 13th, 1945. The Sweet Adelines International is worldwide women's organization committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony. More information can be found on their website.
