About the Holiday
Bird Day is the oldest of all the bird holidays. It was first celebrated on May 4, 1894 and was initiated by Charles Almanzo Babcock, the superintendent of schools in Oil City, Pennsylvania. The goal was to integrate bird conservation into school curriculum. Bird Day is often celebrated in conjunction with Arbor Day. Both holidays stress the importance of conservation training and awareness.
