About the Holiday
Black Poetry Day celebrates the contributions African Americans have made to poetry. The designation of this holiday pays tribute to Jupiter Hammon who was the First African American to have his poetry published in the United States and was born on this day in 1711. Jupiter was born in Long Island, New York and was born into slavery. He taught himself how to read.
