About the Holiday
Candlemas is a Christian Holiday that celebrates Mary's presentation of Jesus to God in the temple that was said to be done after observing the 40 days of purification which was traditionally observed after the birth of a male child. According to the New Testiment in the Bible, a Jewish man named Simeon held the baby Jesus and declared that he would be "a light for the Gentiles" which gives this holiday its name. Some Christians also leave their Christmas decorations up until this day.
