About the Holiday
Celebrate Checkers Day by playing a good ol' game of checkers with a friend. Do you want to be black or red?
Actually, the history of this day has nothing to do with the game of checkers. In a speech given, by Richard Nixon in 1952, he was assuring the public that he was not using campaign contributions for personal use. He said that his daughters had received a gift. The gift was a dog and his name was "Checkers". He said they would be keeping the dog.
This became known as the "Checkers" speech and is one of the better speeches in political history.
This day is also referred to as "Dogs in Politics Day."
