About the Holiday
Clam Chowder Day is not a federal holiday, but still worth celebrating. Common clam chowders include red/tomato based (Manhattan) or white/cream based (New England). The name chowder comes from the French “chaudier” which is a rustic vessel or cauldron fishermen used to cook the soup. The soup is made with clams and often potatoes and onions. Clams are bivalves (two-shells) and are members of the mollusks family. There are over 2,000 varieties of clams that are divided into two main types: hard-shell and soft-shell. Live clams will live from 7 to 10 days when stored in the refrigerator.
