About the Holiday
Freethought Day occurs on the anniversary of the effective end of the Salem Witch trials, which is observed by some as October 12th, 1692 in connection with a letter where Massachusetts Governor William Phips wrote of the perils of non-objective and spectral evidence. After this date the trials still continued, though the reliance on spectral evidence was minimized and all those subsequently convicted were pardoned by Phips. The purpose of this holiday is to encourage people to be free thinkers where opinions should be based on facts, science, logic and reason.
