About the Holiday
Harlem Globetrotters Day celebrates the anniversary of the first Harlem Globetrotters game on January 7th, 1927. The Harlem Globetrotters were the creation of Chicago businessman Abe Saperstein in a time when only whites were allowed to play professional basketball. Even though the team was out of Chicago, the team was named for the New York borough to emphasize its ethnic heritage. In the early years, the team was a serious, competitive team and had an impressive winning record. It wasn't until 1939 when the Globetrotters started their display of basketball tricks and comedic entertainment. The team was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, and was even awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for their entertainment value.
