About the Holiday
Have a Coke Day celebrates this popular beverage that was invented by pharmacist Dr. John Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia in 1886. Originally marketed as a tonic this beverage contained cocaine and kola nut extracts (high in caffeine). The name coke came from his bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, who scripted the logo that is still used today.
Flavors added to coke include cherry, vanilla, chocolate, or lime. There is also Diet Coke and Coke Zero. Coca-Cola is America's #1 brand. Their arch rival is Pepsi-Cola. Many remember the popular 1971 song "I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke" performed by Hilltop Singers.
