About the Holiday
This early form of communication is pretty much gone due to modern technologies like the telephone. But long ago people would use hollerin' to greet others, in distress, warnings, to call in their dog, pig, or cow. In 1969 a local citizen of Spivey Corner, North Carolina, named Ermon Godwin, Jr., wanted to revive this tradition so the first Hollerin' contest took place in Spivey's Corner, North Carolina and has been an annual event ever since. Proceeds benefit their volunteer fire department. So today, hang up your home and cell phone and instead give a hollerin' hello to your neighbors.
