About the Holiday
Labor Day is a day to get some rest and relaxation. Labor Day originated in 1882 as the Central Labor Union of New York City desired for a day off for the working citizens (see image for artistic rendition of the parade held on that day). On June 28, 1894, congress made Labor Day a federal holiday. Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the "official" end of the summer. Many people will celebrate by having picnics, barbecues, and some families take advantage of this long weekend to fit in a vacation before the school year begins.
