About the Holiday
Mother's Day is a day to honor our mothers and women who have been mother figures to us. Created in the United States by Anna Jarvis on May 10, 1908 as a memorial for her deceased mother which took place at Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. White carnations (her mother's favorite flower) were given to mothers in attendance. It became an official holiday in 1914 when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday. Because of the over commercialization that Mother's Day became, Anna Jarvis actually regretted starting this holiday and even tried to have it removed from the calendar.
