About the Holiday
National Bow Tie Day celebrates this often overlooked fashion accessory that dates back to the 1700s. The predecessor of the bow tie is the cravat. TheBowTie.com states that "The Croatian soldiers of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) were one of the first documented peoples to don a necktie". These soldiers were recognizable by the scarves or cravats around their neck. Bow ties are sold as self-tie, pre-tied or clip-on. Bow ties are usually worn for formal events like a wedding or prom.
Some famous personalities that wear (or wore) bow ties include Pee-wee Herman, Bill Nye (the science guy), Orville Redenbacher, James Bond, Fred Astaire, The Cat in the Hat, Groucho Marx, Donald Duck, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, George Burns and Colonel Sanders.
