About the Holiday
National Cat Day was created by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige to not only celebrate the cats in our lives and the companionship they provide but to also recognize the need to rescue cats. Cats were first domesticated 12,000 years ago and became very useful when agricultural societies emerged as cats were key at keeping mice and rodents out. 1/3 of U.S. households have cats.
Not only are cats lower maintenance than dogs, owning one is good for your health. See ModernCat.com for the Benefits of Interacting with Cats
And, of course, we don't forget famous cats like Healthcliff, Garfield Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, Felix the Cat, Hello Kitty, Scratchy from the Simpsons, Cat in the Hat, Puss in Boots, and The Aristocats.
