About the Holiday
National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day celebrates this popular candy that's been around since the 1920's. Often eaten at movie theaters along with popcorn, a popular version of this candy is Nestle's Raisinets. Per NestleUSA.com "Raisinets chocolate covered raisins were first introduced by a family-owned business in 1927, the Blumenthal Brothers Chocolate Company of Philadelphia. The brand was sold over the years and in 1984, Nestlé acquired then owner Ward–Johnston, makers of Raisinets, Goobers, Chunky, Sno-Caps, Bit-O-Honey and Oh Henry!".
Raisinets are made in the USA and the grapes used are Thompson Seedless grapes harvested in California’s Central Valley. Each is polished to give the chocolate a shine and come in either milk or dark chocolate. For a candy they have some health benefits as raisins contain fiber, potassium, iron, calcium, and some B vitamins. The fruit and chocolate add antioxidants and minerals.
