About the Holiday
National Iced Day celebrates a favorite summer drink that also happens to be good for you. While ice tea recipes have been found in cookbooks that date back to 1876 and 1877 it gained popularity at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Iced tea is served sweet or unsweet and is often accompanied with lemon and/or mint leaves.
The type of tea typically used in iced tea is black tea but any of the popular teas can make great iced tea, like Earl Grey, Green Tea, Darjeeling Tea, Chamomile, Peppermint, Jasmine, Lemon, or Peach Tea. Popular tea brands include Lipton, Bigelow, Twinings of London, Luzianne, Celestial Seasonings, and Tazo.
Besides tasting great tea has health benefits too. Per WedMD.com "purists consider only green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea, and pu-erh tea the real thing. They are all derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, a shrub native to China and India, and contain unique antioxidants called flavonoids. The most potent of these, known as ECGC, may help against free radicals that can contribute to cancer, heart disease, and clogged arteries."
