About the Holiday
On National Macaroon Day, we celebrate the cookies thought to have originated in an Italian monastery in the mid 18th century. These cookie confections were originally made from egg whites and almond paste. Many variations have since been produced in several different countries. In North America, the most well-known macaroon is filled with coconut. This sweet little treat derives its name from the Italian word, "maccherone", because almond macaroon paste is the same color as macaroni pasta.
