About the Holiday
This holiday honors all who serve or have served as merchant mariners. May 22nd was declared National Maritime Day by Congress in 1933. Merchant mariners help keep our country safe and prosperous as they serve on our ships, shipyards, tugs, and ports here and abroad. We honor their invaluable contributions to America's economic strength and security. May 22nd also marks the date that the American steamship SS Savannah traveled from the U.S. to England, in 1819, making it the first successful crossing of the Atlantic ocean using steam propulsion.
