About the Holiday
National Merry-Go-Round Day celebrates a simple pleasure that is a traditional must for anyone who attends a carnival or amusement park. After all, what trip to the carnival would be complete without a ride on the merry-go-round? The carousel is believed to have its origins in the Byzantine Empire around 500 A.D where people would ride in baskets supported on a central pole.[1] It then spread to Europe, and from there made it to the United States around the 1840s-50s.
This date was chosen for the holiday as it coincides with the first US patent issued for the modern carousel which was awarded to William Schneider of Davenport, Iowa on July 25th, 1871.
