About the Holiday
National Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Day celebrates this yellow cake that you make upside down. You start off by lining the bottom of a pan with butter and brown sugar and top with pineapple rings, put a maraschino cherry in the center of each ring, and pour cake batter on top. When the cake is cooked you flip the cake out so the pineapple rings are on the top of the cake.
Canned pineapples were developed by Jim Dole in 1903. The Dole company is credited to the popularity of this cake. The first recorded recipe for Pineapple Upside Down Cake, according to John Mariani's The Dictionary of American Food and Drink says "The first mention in print of such a cake was in 1930".
