About the Holiday
National Pralines Day pays tribute to this candy made from nuts and caramelized sugar. This confectionery was inspired in the 17th century by French soldier and sugar industrialist Marshal du Plessis-Praslin (1598-1675). They were originally made with almonds but when the French settlers brought the recipe to Louisiana pecans were used since they were a plenty there.
Great pralines may be found at some candy shops in Savannah, GA and New Orleans, LA. Details about The History of Pralines can be found on SouthernCandyMakers.com's site.
