About the Holiday
National Puppy Day was founded in 2006 by pet lifestyle expert, animal behaviorist, author, and the editor-in-chief of "Pet Home" Magazine, Colleen Paige. She also founded National Dog Day and National Cat Day. According to the founder “National Puppy Day is a special day, recognized on March 23rd annually, to celebrate the magic and unconditional love that puppies bring to our lives. But more importantly, it’s a day to help save orphaned puppies across the globe and educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills." National Puppy Day promotes adoption of puppies from the humane society, rescue groups, or local shelters rather than at pet stores. The Humane Society has some pet stats at this link http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/pet_overpopulation/facts/pet_ownership_statistics.html
