About the Holiday
National Strawberry Sundae Day celebrates a delicious ice cream dessert covered in one of America's favorite fruits, the strawberry. One of the many stories about the invention of the ice cream sundae, states that laws were once passed that prohibited the selling of soda water on a Sunday. As an alternative on Sundays, soda fountains started selling ice cream sodas minus the soda, which left only the ice cream and syrup, which became the recipe of what was to become know as the ice cream sundae. Various American localities have claimed to be the birthplace of the ice cream sundae. Currently there is a heated debate between Ithaca, NY and Two Rivers, WI about which town is actually the "birthplace of the ice cream sundae".
Celebrating this holiday is simple as enjoying some delicious vanilla bean ice cream smothered in strawberry sauce -- though, be sure to make enough to share!
