About the Holiday
Neon Sign Day commemorates the development of the first neon sign in 1911 by French chemist George Claude. Neon signs are often used to let customers know if an establishment is open or closed or to promote a company name or logo. The first neon sign used was by a Paris barber in 1912. Las Vegas retires its neon signs in a museum called "The Boneyard". Neon lights are affordable and the lifespan of one that is used 24 hours a day is 8 to 15 years. Neon, argon, helium, xenon and krypton are are some of the gases used to make colors in neon signs.
