About the Holiday
This is a nursery rhyme and singing game. Not certain of the origin of Pop Goes the Weasel Day but the song dates back to the 1800s starting in England and soon after the U.S. Supposedly some people in London were blowing their money at a pub called the Eagle Tavern and the song goes...
- "Up and down the City road,
- In and out the Eagle,
- That’s the way the money goes,
- Pop! goes the weasel."
The American version is as follows...
- "All around the mulberry bush,
- The monkey chased the weasel;
- The monkey thought ’twas all in fun,
- Pop! goes the weasel."
We're not sure of the meaning behind this version.
