About the Holiday

With Valentine's Day being a celebration for couples, Quirkyalone Day is an alternative holiday that celebrates those who aren't opposed to being in relationships, but who prefer being single rather than to dating just so they can be in a relationship. To describe this disposition, the term quirkyalone was coined on New Year's Eve 1999 by magazine publisher Sasha Cagen.^[1]

This holiday was started started in 2003 as a "celebration of romance, freedom and individuality." The February 14th date chosen for this holiday serves as a reminder to not feel left out of the couple's celebrations, but to enjoy and celebrate freedom, individuality and true romance.
