About the Holiday
On Slugs Return from Capistrano Day the slugs that have been living in the beautiful Mission San Juan Capistrano leave their winter haven and go back to the gardens and yards they came from. The holiday is a parody of "Swallows Return to Capistrano" or "Swallows Day" when, two months earlier in March, swallows migrate to Capistrano.
Slugs, like snails, are classified as gastropods. As adults these nocturnal feeders can be single sex or hermaphroditic (having both female and male body parts) and be self-fertile. Slugs are one of the most destructive pests and hardest to control.
