About the Holiday
In 1907, John Walter Bratton wrote the instrumental song "The Teddy Bears' Picnic." The song was later recorded by several musical artists, including Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Jerry Garcia and Anne Murray, using lyrics that were written by James Kennedy in 1932.
In 1988, collectibles dealer, Royal Selangor, launched "Teddy Bears' Picnic Day" by releasing jewelry boxes and children's collectibles that featured children and teddy bears enjoying picnics in the park. The collectibles were so popular that children's birthday parties started to have "Teddy Bears' Picnic" themes, and parents and institutions rallied to have the event named a holiday. National Teddy Bear Picnic Day was officially created in 1988. Although the holiday has faded in popularity in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia still proclaim this day a national holiday.
