About the Holiday
Vesuvius Day marks the day that Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD and is celebrated in Italy. The eruption wiped out the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and is one largest volcano explosions in recorded history. The explosion was thought to have lasted 19 hours and is still an active volcano in southern Italy.
