About the Holiday
Although the ancient Greeks made cakes similar to the waffle, the earliest waffle iron originated from the Netherlands around the 1300s, where it was common to imprint elaborate patterns upon the waffle, including a coat of arms, landscapes, or religious symbols. In the 1620s, Dutch pilgrims brought waffle irons to America, and in 1869, the Dutch-American Cornelius Swarthout patented the first U.S. waffle iron. [1] Americans adore their waffles, so it only makes sense to celebrate Waffle Iron Day. And while you're at it, take time to thank a Dutchman for bringing us this marvelous invention.
