About the Holiday
World Braille Day recognizes the invention of braille by Frenchman Louis Braille who was born on January 4th 1809. Braille was blinded by accident as a child. As he attended school, he yearned for a better way for the visually impaired to read and write. By 1824, at the age of 15, Louis' work on his braille system was mostly complete.[1] It is still widely used today.
