About the Holiday
World Milk Day was started in 2001 by the The Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to encourage milk and dairy consumption as part of a daily diet. It celebrates things like the origin of milk, the nutritional value, as well as the variety of products made with milk. According to the FAO, "Studies suggest consumption of milk and low-fat dairy products helps reduce risks of many chronic diseases and disorders....Milk is a highly nutritious food and an excellent source of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals."
The number of things you can do with milk are many. You can drink milk cold, warm like in hot chocolate, put it in your cereal or oatmeal, use it coffee or tea, to make eggs, pancakes, mashed potatoes, milkshakes, or smoothies. Dr. Catherine Logan, Nutrition Manager with the National Dairy Council says "One glass of semi-skimmed milk (1/3 pint) provides a source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iodine and vitamins B2 and B12."
