About the Holiday
World No Tobacco Day was created by WHO (World Health Organization) in 1987. They wanted to draw attention to the worldwide epidemic of tobacco use and the health problems it causes. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) "Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. This year, globally more than 5 million people will die from heart attack, stroke, cancer, lung disease, or other illnesses related to tobacco use. An additional 600,000 people—more than a quarter of them children—will die from exposure to secondhand smoke." The nicotine in tobacco is a highly addictive chemical substance. So, at least for today, say no to cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, pipes, and snuff.
