About the Holiday
Good Samaritan Involvement Day marks the anniversary, on March 13, 1964, that Catherine "Kitty" Genovese was attacked and stabbed to death in Queens, NY while many of her neighbors heard or saw the crime and did nothing about it. So, today celebrates unselfish acts toward those in need. The Good Samaritan story comes from the Bible in the Gospel of Luke 10:29-37. As the story goes a man was robbed, stripped, beat and left for dead. Both a priest and Levite passed him by without helping. But, a Samaritan traveler tended his wounds, took him on his own animal, and paid for him to stay in an inn. The story points out that your neighbor does not have to be someone that lives near by but rather any fellow human should be treated with mercy.
