About the Holiday
The Knights of Columbus, named after Christopher Columbus, was founded in New Haven, CT on March 29, 1882 by an Irish-Catholic American priest named Father Michael J. McGivney. It was McGivney's dream to provide insurance to assist widows and orphans. Today, the organization boasts over 1.7 million members in 14,000 councils around the world. Hundreds of millions of dollars are raised annually and given directly to charity, while additional millions are placed into endowment funds for church related causes. While collectively logging over 60 million volunteer hours for the organization, a knight's highest duty still remains as caretaker of a widow or orphan of a fallen brother knight.
