About the Holiday
Make a Difference Day is all about community service. It was created in 1992 by Gannett Co., Inc. (owner of USA Today) in partnership with Points of Light which is the largest volunteer organization. Per USA Today "The event started in 1992 when Leap Day fell on a Saturday and USA WEEKEND asked its readers to spend their extra day doing something good for someone else. The response was overwhelming and has since expanded...Make A Difference Day is a chance for Americans to come together for the common purpose of doing good and helping others" says Gracia Martore, Gannett's president and chief executive officer.
There are many national organizations that need volunteers. Some popular ones include the American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Catholic Charities, Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, Special Olympics, Toys for Tots, United Way, and the YMCA.
