About the Holiday
On Memorial Day we honor the men and women that died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally it was called Decoration Day which was established in May 1868 as a day to decorate (usually with flowers) the graves of the fallen Union and Confederate soldiers from the Civil War. In 1971 congress declared Memorial Day to be a national holiday celebrated on the last Monday in May. Many Americans visit or put flags on soldier's grave sites and hang their U.S. flag outside. Memorial day also unofficially marks the beginning of summer.
