About the Holiday
On Armed Forces Day, we celebrate and salute all of the men and women in our armed forces. These include the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve units. Members of our armed forces show an incredible about of courage, commitment, character, and loyalty to one another and our country. They put their lives on the line for you and me. The first Armed Forces Day was held on May 20, 1950. President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to thank our military for their patriotic service in support of our country.
