About the Holiday
On Navy Day we salute all the men and women in the United States Navy that help to protect our country. The first Navy Day was celebrated on October 27th, 1922. This date was chosen because it was the birthday of former President Theodore Roosevelt, who was an avid supporter of the Navy. There was a controversy back in the 1970's that the date of Navy Day should be changed to October 13th, since that's the birthday of the U.S. Continental Navy, but the United States still primarily recognizes the holiday on October 27th.
