About the Holiday
Submarine Day honors these submersible and watertight vessels. It was on this day that Irish engineer John Philip Holland first successfully demonstrated his submarine called Holland VI. This successful trial run occurred in 1898 near Staten Island. He first submitted his submarine design to the United States Navy in 1875 but they turned him down because they thought it wouldn't work.
